The Committee on State Building and Local Self-Government held a Round Table Discussion to debate Regulation of Political Parties in Ukraine

Delivering a speech, Committee Chairman Oleksandr Omelchenko, stated that development of an effective democratic Ukrainian political model was topical in the context of the current political situation. He attached great importance to the formation of an independent effective party system.  

 

The People´s Deputy drew attention to a large number of political parties registered in Ukraine. However, the number of active entities of political life, esp. parties with the parliamentary factions, is limited.  

 

Yurii Kliuchkovskyi, Deputy Chairman of the Committee, stressed that importance of the political parties in the political affairs tended to decrease. Volodymyr Stretovych, Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Law Enforcement, stated that Ukrainian party system was under the threat of monopolization.

Within the common project of the EU and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, officials of the Laboratory for Legislative Initiatives presented the research "Regulation of Political Parties in Ukraine: Current Situation and Reforms."  The research offers the guidelines as to the reforms of Ukrainian legislation on political parties in line with the European standards.

 

The participants of the round table discussion called for amending legislation in part of establishment and liquidation of political parties, account for gender issues and problems of the national minorities, reforms of the system of financial support of the political parties and election campaigns.
