Thursday, Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, met Irena
Degutienė, Seimas Speaker of the Republic of Lithuania.
The meeting was held in the framework of the working visit of V.Lytvyn to Lithuania.
The Seimas Speaker appreciated European integration pursuit of Ukraine, and called for giving incentives to the accession of our state to the European Union. "We suggest that Ukraine, Lithuania and Poland jointly advocate the idea of Ukraine´s membership in the European Union among other states," she stressed.
"However, to access the European Union, Ukraine has to do plenty of home assignments," Mrs Degutienė stressed. On behalf of the Seimas, she expressed intention to assist Ukraine in these proceedings.
The Seimas Speaker suggested establishing a joint humanitarian forum to involve scientific institutions. "The researchers of Ukraine and Lithuania could jointly make research, found scientific laboratories and launch student exchange," she stated. In the framework of the humanitarian forum, economic one could be established, as the Lithuanian Party is interested in the academic potential of Ukraine.
V.Lytvyn supported the initiative of the Seimas Speaker, declaring willingness to unite the efforts. He promised to have a talk with the members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine to implement this worthy idea. "We have the list of investigations interesting for both parties," the Head of the Ukrainian Parliament stated. He singled out historical and linguistic issues. V.Lytvyn deems necessary to involve researchers and students of Kyiv and Chernivtsi National Universities to this work. "It will extend the scope of our relations," he stressed.
"Humanitarian sector should be developed," the Head of the Ukrainian Parliament underscored.
Dwelling upon the political situation, V.Lytvyn laid emphasis on a stable and predictable situation in Ukraine, which made his visit possible, as otherwise he claimed not to have left the country.
V.Lytvyn briefed on the prospects of
the constitutional reform in Ukraine.
He informed about the forthcoming amendments to the Constitution concerning the
terms of authorities of The Verkhovna Rada. He deems necessary to support and
preserve parliamentarism in Ukraine.
As it was reported, on 7-8 of October, Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, stays with the working visit in the Republic of Lithuania and takes part in the sitting of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Senate of the Republic of Lithuania and Sejm of the Republic of Poland.
Pursuant to the schedule of visit, V. Lytvyn shall also meet Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of the Republic of Lithuania, and Bogdan Borusewicz, Marshal of the Senate of the Republic of Poland.
