Mykola Tomenko: The 170th Anniversary of Mykhailo Drahomanov Birth should be properly celebrated in Ukraine
Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, visited M. Drahomanov National Pedagogical University and Institute of Journalism of Kyiv T. Shevchenko National University, to meet the students and present a new conceptual portal "Ridna Kraina" (www.ridnaua.org).
Meeting the students of Drahomanov National Pedagogical University, Mykola Tomenko reminded that next year Ukraine would celebrate the 170th anniversary of M. Drahomanov´s birth, which should be properly organized. The Deputy Chairman also stated that he had recently stayed with a working visit in Bulgaria to attend the 5th International Scientific Conference "Drahomanivski Studii" (Drahomanov Studies) dedicated to the 115th anniversary of M.Drahomanov´s death, and held several official meetings at the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria. M.Tomenko suggested that Bulgarian academicians and public figures joined Ukraine in the celebration of the 170th anniversary of birth of M.Drahomanov next year. M.Drahomanov lived in Bulgaria for certain time, working as a professor in Sofia University. The collection of books of the researcher became a foundation of the university library that bears his name. M.Drahomanov made a valuable contribution into the development of education and science of Bulgaria. He died and was buried in this country.
The Deputy Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament also informed that jointly with People´s Deputies V.Zubanov and V.Petrenko, he had registered the draft resolution "On Celebration of the 170th anniversary of birth of Mykhailo Drahomanov, Prominent Ukrainian Writer, Publicist, Historian and Public Figure" to celebrate this date at the national level. "Mykhailo Drahomanov is one of the leading pro-European political figures, a co-founder of the Ukrainian school of political science. His heritage as the ideologist of a European Ukraine should be duly assessed and studied," M.Tomenko stated. "Mykhailo Drahomanov is one of the most prominent political men of with European world-view, one of the founders of the Ukrainian political science. It is necessary to make everything possible for his heritage, as an ideology of European Ukraine, is appropriately evaluated and learned", M. Tomenko declared.
In his turn, Viktor Andrushchenko, Rector of the Drahomanov National Pedagogical University, announced that the University was preparing a celebration and several events dedicated to the anniversary.
