The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk, during his working visit to Madrid, to participate in the XII Ibero-American Parliamentary Forum, held meetings with the President of ParlAmericas and Chilean Senator Ivàn Flores Garcia, the President of the Andean Parliament Manuel José Ossandón Irarrázabal, and the President of the Senate of the Congress of the Republic of Colombia Honorio Miguel Henriquez Pinedo.
During the conversation with Ivàn Flores Garcia, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine thanked for the consistent support for Ukraine, its sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
“ParlAmericas — one of the key platforms for parliamentary diplomacy in the Western Hemisphere, bringing together the national parliaments of 35 countries across North, Central and South America and the Caribbean,” noted Ruslan Stefanchuk.
Separately, they discussed the issues of developing a systematic dialogue between the Verkhovna Rada and the parliaments of the region's states.
“It is important for Ukraine that russia’s aggression, the defence of sovereignty and territorial integrity, and respect for international law remain at the centre of attention of parliaments across the Americas,” emphasized the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada.
The parties agreed to maintain contacts and explore new formats of cooperation. Ruslan Stefanchuk invited Iván Flores García and a ParlAmericas delegation to visit Ukraine, as well as to take part in this year’s Parliamentary Summit of the Crimea Platform.
With the President of the Andean Parliament, Manuel José Ossandón Irarrázabal, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine briefed him on the consequences of the latest russian strikes on Ukraine and on the conditions in which Ukrainian cities and communities live every day.
At the centre of the conversation were the further deepening of cooperation with the Verkhovna Rada, the participation of Ukrainian parliamentarians in the events of the Andean Parliament, and the development of a sustained interregional dialogue. Human rights and humanitarian initiatives, to which the President of the Andean Parliament expressed readiness to contribute, were addressed separately.
"It is important for Ukraine that the voice of truth about this war is heard in parliaments across all regions of the world — and that this dialogue transitions into concrete joint actions," said Ruslan Stefanchuk.
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada thanked the President of the Senate of the Congress of the Republic of Colombia, Honorio Miguel Henríquez Pinedo, for supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, highlighting the importance of initiating a direct inter-parliamentary dialogue.
Among the key topics discussed were further political and humanitarian support for Ukraine, strengthening sanctions pressure on russia, assistance to Ukrainian children, humanitarian initiatives, and holding the aggressor state accountable.
"During my speech at the Ibero-American Parliamentary Forum, I spoke about the pain that Ukrainians go through every day because of the war brought by russia. It is important for us that this experience finds understanding and support in the parliaments of other states. Support for Ukraine must resound not only at the governmental level — it is equally essential that it be consistently reinforced by parliaments," noted Ruslan Stefanchuk.
He called on Colombia to continue supporting Ukraine politically and diplomatically, as well as to contribute to intensifying sanctions pressure on russia.
"We welcome the initiation of this dialogue. We strive to make the ties between our parliaments stronger, and the Parliamentary Summit of the Crimea Platform can serve as one of the platforms for their development. I handed over an invitation to participate in the Fifth Summit," emphasized the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada.
