Support for Ukraine, Energy Restoration, and the Return of Children: Oleksandr Korniyenko Meets with First Deputy Speaker of the Icelandic Althing

First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniyenko met with First Deputy Speaker of the Icelandic Althing Bryndís Haraldsdóttir. Members of the Parliament of Ukraine Arseniy Pushkarenko and Tetyana Hryshchenko also joined the conversation.
During the meeting, the parties discussed priority areas of cooperation, with a particular focus on support for the Ukrainian energy sector. Attention was also centered on the equipment needed to restore infrastructure damaged as a result of russian attacks, as well as the further decentralization of the energy system.
Special attention was paid to the return of Ukrainian children illegally deported by russia from the temporarily occupied territories, including with the facilitation of belarus.
“Constant international attention and joint efforts from our partners are necessary for their return, which is why we count on Iceland’s support in this direction as well,” stated Oleksandr Korniyenko.
The First Deputy Speaker also informed his Icelandic colleagues about the work of the parliamentary group preparing for elections after the end of martial law. According to him, it is already necessary to professionally draft legislative solutions today that will allow for the organization of a fully democratic electoral process once the war is over.
Oleksandr Korniyenko expressed gratitude to Iceland for its consistent support of Ukraine and assistance since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
“Iceland was the first to ratify the Convention related to the creation of an international compensation mechanism for Ukraine, and for us, this is an important example of practical support. We also have experience from our parliamentarians working together in 2024–2025 and are interested in expanding this interaction across other international platforms,” he noted.
The parties agreed to continue their inter-parliamentary dialogue and expand cooperation on international platforms. Oleksandr Korniyenko invited his Icelandic colleagues to join the Parliamentary Summit of the International Crimea Platform, which will be held in London this year.
