Lawgivers preapprove impunity of MPs for in-house public utterances and voting results

The Verkhovna Rada approved the resolution No.7203 "On prior consent over the draft bill amending Article 80 of the Constitution of Ukraine (concerning parliamentary privilege for Ukrainian parliamentarians)".

The corresponding decision was made today during the first plenary session of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the IX convocation. 363 MPs voted for the document. The resolution shall enter into force on the day of its adoption.

The bill is supposed to amend Article 80 of the Constitution of Ukraine and absolve a parliamentarian from legal liability for voting results or public utterances in the parliament and its bodies, except for responsibility for insult (affront) or defamation.

The law would come into force on January 1, 2020.
