The Permanent Delegation of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in The Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly, held a Press Conference on its Participation in the First Part of The 2008 PACE Session

The Head of the Ukrainian Delegation, I. Popesku, confirmed that the Assembly had considered a number of important matters, and among them arrangements related to the future status of Kosovo, ‘Black Lists´ compiled by the UN Security Council and EC, and procedural guidelines concerning the Rights and Duties of the Opposition in the Democratic Parliament. Special focus was placed on the issue of the disappearance of newborn babies and their illegal adoption in Europe.

 

 A Report ‘Trans-Border Co-operation´ was presented at the PACE Session by The People´s Deputy of Ukraine, I. Popesku, as a Member of The PACE Committee on the Environment, Agriculture, Local and Regional Affairs. In the outcome of the debates, a relevant Recommendation was adopted on this matter without a single amendment.

 

Also taking floor at the Assembly were the People´s Deputies, V. Pysarenko, on the Rights and Obligations of the political Opposition, and Ye. Marmazov, on the disappearance of newborn babies.

 

During the Session, S. Holovaty was re-elected PACE Vice-President and elected Chairman of the Monitoring Committee. I. Popesku was elected Vice Chairman of the Sustainable Development Sub-committee within the Committee on the Environment, Agriculture and Local and Regional Affairs.

 

The People´s Deputies, O. Herasimiuk, O. Bilozir, and O. Bondarenko, Members of the Ukrainian Delegation, initiated the introduction, on the floor of the Assembly, of the issue of the Condemnation of The Famine (Holodomor ) in Ukraine (Motion for a Resolution). The Document, signed by over 50 National Delegations, was forwarded to the PACE Secretariat. O. Bilozir also initiated a Motion for a Resolution on the enhancement of legal protection of Migrants within the Council of Europe member states.


Members of the Ukrainian Delegation held several meetings, and among them a meeting with the newly elected Assembly President, L.M. de Puig; CE General Secretary, T. Davis, PACE Monitoring Committee Co-rapporteurs, R. Wolhwend and H. Severinsen, and S.Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger who will supersede H.Severinsen.

 

Members of the Permanent Delegation also met with the CE Secretary, Mr T. Davis, and discussed the situation in Ukraine, and Ukraine/CE interaction issues.
