On February 22, 2016, Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Affairs Hanna Hopko met with Chairperson of Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense of House of Councilors of Parliament of Japan Sato Masahisa in Tokyo.

The Chairperson of the Committee also informed Mr. Sato Masahisa about current situation in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and eastern regions of Ukraine. She noted that the Russian Federation continues ignoring the Minsk agreements.

Hanna Hopko stressed the necessity for reformation of the United Nations, first of all the mechanism of adoption of important decisions within the framework of this organization. She reminded that imperfection of that mechanism allowed Russia to veto an extremely important Resolution of the UN Security Council on establishment of an international tribunal to investigate the incident with the MH-17 flight.

In turn, Mr. Sato Masahisa noted that Japan does not acknowledge the change of the status quo in Ukraine, which took place unilaterally and with the use of force. He also informed about the latest changes in the Japan's legislation in the field of defense and security adopted, first of all, over the deterioration of the security situation in the Asia-Pacific Region.

The Parties expressed readiness for further intensification of the whole sector of bilateral cooperation, inter alia at the interparliamentary level. Besides, the Parties stressed the importance of close cooperation within the framework of non-permanent membership of Ukraine and Japan in the UN Security Council, in particular, in adoption of the resolution on Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
