Mykola Tomenko: The Government may destroy one of 7 Natural Wonders of Ukraine.
Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, appealed to the Prime Minister of Ukraine and the Chairman of the Committee on Environmental Policy, Use of Natural Resources and Elimination of Consequences of Chornobyl Disaster with a request to prevent alienation of one of the natural wonders of Ukraine - National Park "Buzkyi Hrad."
In his appeal, Mykola Tomenko reminded that the National Nature Park "Buzkyi Hrad" in Mykolaiv region was set up to preserve, renovate and rationally use the unique natural historical and cultural complexes in the territory of the Southern Buh basin that are of great environmental, research, historical, cultural, esthetic and recreational significance.
The Deputy Chairman reminded that in 2006 the Government had passed the Resolution that allocated 27 hectares of the unique lands in the river basin for the permanent use of "National Atomic Energy Producing Company "Energoatom" for the building of Oleksandrivske water storage reservoir. In 2006, the international charity organization "Ecology-Law-Human Being" appealed against the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. The court has scrutinized the case for four years. Finally, on November 9, 2010, the panel of judges of the Administrative Court in Kyiv adjudicated in a case. Thus, the claim of charity organization was satisfied, and the Governmental Resolution was recognized as invalid.
M. Tomenko focused on the fact that in 2008, the National Nature Park "Buzkyi Hrad" was recognized as one of 7 Nature Wonders of Ukraine. He admitted that possible building of the water storage reservoir is fraught with the danger of destruction of the historical memorial Hrad island and unique plants from the Red Book.
