Mykola Tomenko: For the Development of the Physical Culture and Sport, for Image of Ukraine - the Summer Olympic Games are the best
In the interview to Den newspaper, asked about the possibility of conducting winter Olympic Games 2022 in Carpathians, Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, declared that for the development of physical culture, port and for the image of Ukraine the Summer Olympic Game are much better.
"Olympic Games are first of all the opportunity to improve well-being of the entire state", M. Tomenko emphasised and declared that he as a person promoting development of culture and sports suggests conducting summer games. "Our traditional sports are summer ones. Ukraine has never been a "winter" country. We preserved biathlon, partially figure skating, skiing etc", he emphasised.
Moreover, the Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine reminded that actually there are no facilities in Ukraine for the development of winter sports and conduction of different winter contests.
"Our kinds of sport are swimming, though they are in decline now. If we were able to conduct summer Olympic Games, we could build swimming pools, facilities of callisthenics, playing halls gyms, etc", M. Tomenko emphasised. "Moreover, there are no necessary places for the training of gymnasts, wrestlers, boxers it is also a problem."
Though, according to M. Tomenko "there are little chances for us to conduct Summer Olympic Games, there are even smaller chances to conduct winter Games." "Despite the fact that Ukraine is completely unready to conduct such contests, despite the fact that the Winter Olympic Games 2014 are held in Russia, the most important fact is that we would need urgent allocation of the budget funds for the building of sports facilities that would not be used afterwards", Mykola Tomenko stated. "Hence, the declaration of the President was some kind of a PR action for the western regions of Ukraine, though it is wrong from the point of view of the efficient and successful strategy", he added.
