The World Water Day was established by the UN General Assembly in 1993 and is celebrated annually on 22 March. The theme of the 2024 World Water Day is “Water for Peace”.
The purpose of the day is to draw attention to the problems of drinking water quality, the need to protect water resources and their rational use, and to raise awareness of the importance of water for the continuation of life on Earth.
In addition, water – the basis of all life and a powerful element – can also be a source of danger and natural disasters, which can be manifested in spring during the floods.
The Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Environmental Policy and Nature Management pays constant attention to the protection, conservation, use and restoration (reproduction) of Ukraine's water resources.
The principles of functioning of the water disposal system aimed at creating favourable conditions for human life and protecting the environment from the negative impact of wastewater are laid down in the Law of Ukraine No. 2887-IX “On Water Disposal and Wastewater Treatment” adopted by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine dated 12.01.2023, for which the Committee was appointed as the lead agency for the development of the relevant draft act and preparation for consideration.
In addition, the members of the Committee joined the Interagency Working Group on Water Policy to coordinate actions to implement the Water Strategy of Ukraine until 2050.
Even under the conditions of a military budget, we must find a way to achieve "good" water status and ensure that water is available to every Ukrainian.
Last year, 2023, was an extremely difficult year for the water sector due to the russian occupiers’ blowing up of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. The large-scale environmental disaster caused by the dam's destruction was another act of ecocide for which the inevitability of punishment will be ensured. We are confident that the aggressor, who is still continuing its attacks on Ukraine's largest hydroelectric power plant, the Dnipro HPP in Zaporizhzhia, will be adequately repelled.
