The biomethane sector in Ukraine has great potential, as the state has created incentives to increase the production of this gas.

Andrii Gerus, the Chairman of the Committee on Energy, Housing and Utilities, said during the First Ukrainian Biomethane Forum.

“Today we understand the urgency of diversifying energy production. Biomethane trade should become a component of the gas market. The agricultural sector has created all the opportunities for biomethane production,” said Andrii Gerus.

According to the Chairman of the Committee, the Parliament has created a legal framework to stimulate the development of this area. For example, biomethane producers have been given the opportunity to enter the European market, where the price of this fuel is premium as an energy resource from renewable energy sources.

The relevant law that allows Ukrainian biomethane producers to export their product to European markets and join the relevant European network has already been adopted.

“We worked together with the Tax Committee of the Verkhovna Rada, and our Committee member Andrii Zhupanyn was one of the leaders of the process. The permission to export biomethane to Europe is another impetus for the development of this gas production in Ukraine,” said the Committee Chairman.

He stressed that the development of biomethane production and sales will benefit both the companies directly involved and the state budget of Ukraine, as exports ensure the growth of foreign exchange earnings and contribute to macro-financial stability.

The Forum also noted that Naftogaz Group is ready to support investments in expanding biomethane production and has plans to buy this gas from Ukrainian producers.
