MPs – members of the Committee on Energy, Housing and Utilities Services sent an appeal to the parliaments of foreign countries regarding the critical situation in the energy infrastructure of Ukraine as a result of massive attacks by the russian federation.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, russia has been conducting massive shelling of energy infrastructure facilities.

On 22 March 2024, the russian federation launched one of the largest missile attacks on Ukraine's energy sector. The aggressor fired more than 150 missiles and more than 240 Shahed-type UAVs at Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

The attacks on the energy sector demonstrate the aggressor's strategy aimed at destabilising the country and deliberately creating a humanitarian catastrophe. The lack of response from the international community to such actions only emboldens the russian regime to commit new crimes.

In the opinion of the Committee members, in order to prevent future terrorist attacks by the russian federation, it is necessary to take decisive measures to strengthen Ukraine's defence capabilities while severely limiting the financial and industrial resources of the aggressor.

In the appeal, the MPs-members of the Committees called on the parliaments of foreign countries to take the following measures:

1. Increase military and financial assistance to Ukraine to protect it from russian aggression.

2. Enhance the implementation of sanctions that will prevent the russian federation from importing equipment used for weapons production.

3. Limit russia's revenues from oil and gas exports.

4. Impose sanctions against the russian nuclear sector, in particular the State Atomic Energy Corporation rosatom, as it, together with the russian military, is the "executive branch" in the continued occupation of Europe's largest nuclear power plant, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP).

5. Facilitate the establishment of a special international tribunal to prosecute those responsible for war crimes in Ukraine.

Ukraine remains committed to the defence of its independence and sovereignty. The security landscape on the European continent directly depends on the awareness of the risks posed by the russian federation and the concerted action taken by the international community, the Committee members noted in their appeal.
