Every year on 1 April, the International Bird Day is celebrated within the framework of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme. It was on 1 April 1906 that the International Convention for the Protection of Birds was signed. This day is not only the anniversary of the Convention, but also the time when birds return from wintering.

Birds are a special group of fauna. They attract our attention with their melodious singing, beautiful colour, graceful flight, and interesting behaviour.

According to scientific data, there are 10,672 species of birds and 20,344 subspecies. Unfortunately, about 156 species are endangered.

Ukraine is home to about 360 species of birds, and together with those that fly into its territory, this number is about 456 species. However, russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has put many bird species at risk, and the disruption of the Azov-Black Sea migration corridor due to military operations has damaged the spring migration of some species.

Caring for birds is not only an environmental issue, as birds are part of our lives, our culture and our sense of the world. In addition, birds create a necessary chain in the chain of living beings, ensuring balance in the struggle for existence in the animal kingdom.

Let's take care of the birds! With their singing, they fill the souls of Ukrainians with even greater strength of spirit and the desire to expel the occupiers from our land as soon as possible and return to a peaceful life!
