Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Ukraine has fully synchronised its energy system with the European one, and over the previous year has tripled its ability to import electricity from European countries. We also help neighbouring countries with electricity when there is a surplus in our network.

This was stated by Andrii Zhupanyn, the MP and member of the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Housing and Utilities.

“This winter, we imported electricity that Ukraine lacked at certain times. This was especially noticeable in December during severe frosts when we had to buy electricity from Europe. We spent about UAH 120 million on this, and in my opinion, we should not have cut off electricity to save these funds, because every hour without electricity means much more losses for our economy. Over the past year, we have tripled the capacity to import electricity from European countries, so we had the technical capabilities and we used them,” the politician said.

According to him, in January and February, Ukraine almost did not import electricity from Europe. We had enough of our own resources, and in February, the state even started exporting some electricity abroad.

“Since Ukraine's power system is fully synchronised with the European one, we can both receive assistance from Romania, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland and provide support to them. Globally, in certain months, Ukraine produces more electricity than it consumes. This will be particularly noticeable in March, so we will be providing emergency assistance to our neighbouring EU countries,” the MP said.

He also added that the successful passage of the winter in Ukraine was facilitated by warm weather and full reservoirs, which allowed for the production of sufficient electricity and even selling it abroad.
