The address of Ukrainian parliamentarians to the Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Angela D. Merkel with regard to the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas line project

The members of Ukraine’s parliament did uphold European parliamentarians in their appeal to the Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel calling for revision of the German government's policy of supporting the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas line, which would have disastrous economic and political implications for the whole of Europe.

“The pipe line project, capable of strengthening Gazprom’s monopoly at the European gas market, does pose a grave threat to Ukraine’s transit expectancies and a broader security system – and must be stopped! Implementation of this Russian project jeopardizes both EU and Ukraine’s energy independence, yields bad losses and boosts the Kremlin’s aggression against Ukraine.

For European security, the Nord Stream 2 brings the same existential threat as for Ukraine.  In fact, Europe does have existing underused transit capacities for delivering Russian gas and it does not require additional volumes through the Nord Stream 2 line, since the Ukrainian gas transportation system is not used at its full capacity. Consequently, the Nord Stream 2 will not give Europe access to new gas sources.

Europe need not thus take steps which could make Gazprom’s monopoly stronger and might by so doing entail Russia’s prevalence which could result in further Russian meddling into democratic processes of European countries,” states the document.
