“Cooperation with the NATO Parliamentary Assembly is a priority for the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine,” – Andriy Parubiy at a meeting with the NATO PA President R. Jukneviciene

Meeting with the NATO PA President, the Chairperson of the Ukrainian Parliament A.Parubiy congratulated Rasa Jukneviciene on her recent taking the office. He recalled how "desperate and strong was Mrs. Jukneviciene's support for Ukraine" during her tenure at various positions. A.Parubiy emphasized that the strong support from the NATO PA is very important for Ukraine at present "since this is one of the key priorities of Ukraine’s foreign policy".

"Several years ago we did set this priority legislatively," he said. – And, it was a few weeks ago, as we started the process of constitutionalizing of Ukraine’s accession to NATO". According to the Speaker, "it is very important that nobody has ever been able to revise this direction of Ukraine’s foreign policy.  And the respective altering Ukraine’s constitution does guarantee such irreversibility”.  

The decision to hold a NATO PA meeting in 2020 in Kyiv was called to be “a great honour".

A.Parubiy then stressed that Ukraine has been single-mindedly adapting the Ukrainian legislation and the armed forces to the standards of NATO.

He reminded that this June there was adopted the Law of Ukraine "On National security" serving as a framework that defines the general structure of reforming  the entire security sector. The head of the parliament also informed that a sizeable cluster of other security laws is nearing completion, including liberalization of the entire defense industry and trade, creation of a parliamentary intelligence committee, and a law on reforming the SBU and intelligence agencies.

Andriy Parubiy also notified of the current situation in Ukraine, stressing that Ukrainian soldiers defend European values, fighting day by day against the danger and aggression in all spheres.

The politician paid special attention to informational and cybernetics security as "the country enters the year of elections". The head of the parliament supposes a strong influence upon the course of the elections on the part of Russia. "Putin's goals are ensuring impact over the entire territory of Ukraine and returning those Ukrainian authorities that are loyal to him. Generally speaking, there will be casting the dice of the global geopolitical situation," emphasized the speaker of the parliament. He also said that during this plenary week it is planned to consider a bill allocating significant funds for cyber security.

In her turn, Rasa Jukneviciene expressed her deep understanding of the situation in Ukraine and noted that the Ukrainian issue remains high on the NATO PA’s agenda. In addition, she underlined the importance of the constitutional amendments, which legally enshrine the Euro-Atlantic aspirations of the Ukrainian people.

Rasa Jukneviciene also marked the activity of the Ukrainian delegation headed by Iryna Friz and assured full support for Ukraine as well as deepening further cooperation. "It is important for us to have close relationships. Cooperation with Ukraine is one of the priorities of the Parliamentary Assembly," emphasized the NATO PA President, having then stressed the importance of not only gaining membership in NATO, but also making this process irreversible.

The President underscored the weighty role of the Ukrainian Parliament in all the home processes: integration through the society, economy, combating corruption, etc.

She expressed great gratitude to Ukrainians for protecting European values and freedom.

The meeting was also attended by the head of the Permanent parliamentary delegation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Iryna Friz.
