“Our decision to amend the Constitution of Ukraine regarding Ukraine's accession to the EU and NATO is the most important moment of the last plenary week," -- Andriy Parubiy

About week’s results

The politician reckons the EU-NATO accession-related constitutional changes to be the most significant decision of the week. This was said in his interview to the parliamentary ‘Rada’ TV channel. "I believe that the constitutionalization of Ukraine's aspirations towards joining the EU and NATO is the right step," stressed the Chairman of the Parliament, and reminded that two years ago he had initiated this process.

Amending the Constitution is “a long-run procedure, hence no revenge-seeking sorties aiming to abruptly shift away this Ukraine’s running will come off”. It was stressed that the decision had been voted for by 321 members of parliament – and it does speak for itself actually. Andriy Parubiy observed that the final decision could be passed by the winter’s end or in spring.

"Without support of the EU and the North Atlantic Alliance Ukraine remains face to face with the aggression of the Russian Federation, and therefore the said amendments are the issue of Ukraine’s security," added he.

Summing up the plenary week's results, Andriy Parubiy stressed that there have been made twelve positive decisions, “very important decisions". In particular, the Parliament elected a new complement of the Central Election Commission - the issue that “remained pending for years". The Verkhovna Rada also adopted amendments to the Constitution on overseas property and support of farming enterprises. The Parliament’s Chairman drew attention to the fact that "yet another step towards the abolition of parliamentary immunity has been done".

About Ukrainian language and next plenary week plans

Ukrainian language draft bills shall be seen by the Parliament the following plenary week (October 2-5). Andriy Parubiy reminded that the so called "Kolesnichenko-Kivalov" language law was declared to be un-constitutional by the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.

According to him, four language bills have been filed up for consideration so far. "We have to consider them and adopt a basic document,"  informed A.Parubiy.

The next plenary week shall be also dedicated to reviewing clusters of issues on informational security, culture and spirituality, and cyber-security as well. Renaming the two oblasts (regions) of Ukraine – Kirovohrad and Dnipropetrovsk ones – shall finally end Ukraine’s decommunization crusade.

"Regarding the issues of Ukrainian identity, national memory and, in fact, our future as well as the fight for the nation’s mental de-occupation, the current Ukrainian Parliament must take a concerted and precise position," elucidated the Chairman A.Parubiy.
