Committee on Fuel and Energy Complex, Nuclear Policy and Nuclear Safety

The committeemen met an energy delegation from Lithuania, headed by the Energy Minister Zygimantas Vaiciunas and the Vice-Minister Vidmantas Macevicius.

During the meeting, the committee deputy head Oleksandr Dombrovskyi stressed the importance of energy security issues, the progress of energy reforms in Ukraine, the need to liberalize energy markets and the implementation of energy laws passed by the Verkhovna Rada.  There was also discussed creating prerequisites for increasing the share of renewable energy sources, and biofuels, in particular.

In the context of Ukraine's security, there was also paid considerable attention to the construction of the North Stream 2 gas pipeline. A member of the parliamentary committee appealed to the Minister of Energy of Lithuania to support further dialogue with the European partners of Lithuania on the revision of already taken decisions concerning the North Stream 2. The energy minister of Lithuania underscored the total support of Ukraine’s stance on the ‘famous’ Stream.

In conclusion, the Minister of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania Zygimantas Vaiciunas remarked that the members of the European Union were pursuing a consistent course to reduce the use of fossil energy resources. And the Lithuania’s experience in replacing natural gas with domestic resources, in particular biofuels, could be of keen interest to Ukraine. He also emphasized the importance of full-blown utilizing the capabilities of the Klaipeda LNG terminal, for ensuring Ukraine's energy security inclusive.

The сommittee members expressed their gratitude to the Lithuanian partners for supporting Ukraine in the reform of the energy sector.
