As a part of the Parliamentary delegation, the First Deputy Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Iryna Herashchenko is going to partake in a joint sitting of the Inter-Parliamentary Council Ukraine-NATO and the Sub-Committee on NATO Partnerships of the NATO PA Political Committee taking place in Brussels on November 27-28.

There will be a meeting at the Belgian Federal Parliament with the Chamber of Representatives Secretary General and a representative of the Belgian Delegation to the NATO PA on November 27, 2017. Then there will take place a working dinner on behalf of the Secretary General of the NATO PA with a range of representatives from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the Mission of Ukraine to NATO.

A roundtable “Ukraine-NATO Collaboration and NATO-Russia Relations” shall take place on November 28, 2017.

In the course of the working visit, there will be discussed a range of topical avenues for cooperation between Ukraine and the Alliance and the issue of counteraction to the Russian aggression in the east of Ukraine.   

Iryna Friz, Head of the Permanent parliamentary delegation of Ukraine to the NATO PA, Mariia Ionova, the Deputy Head of the Committee on European Integration, Oksana Yurynets, a member of the Permanent parliamentary delegation of Ukraine to the NATO PA and other delegates are also included in the Ukrainian delegation.

NATO Parliamentary Assembly Political Committee

The Political Committee (PC) focuses on all political questions concerning the security of NATO and its member and partner countries. The Committee has two Sub-Committees: The Sub-Committee on NATO Partnerships (PCNP) & the Sub-Committee on Transatlantic Relations (PCTR).     

The areas covered by the Political Committee include:

1.     The current and future role of the Alliance for Euro-Atlantic security;

2.     All political and diplomatic aspects of NATO’s adaptation to a changing international security environment;

3.     The political aspects of the North-American-European relationship;

4.     Existing and evolving partnerships of the Alliance, including NATO programmes EAPC/PfP, ICI and Partners across the Globe as well as the Special Relationships with Ukraine and Georgia and with Russia;

5.     All political aspects of NATO’s existing and developing relationships with International Organizations, particularly the EU and the UN, but also others;

6.     The continuing enlargement of the Alliance and the respective programmes that prepare applicant countries for possible membership (e.g., MAP);

7.     All political and diplomatic aspects that relate to new and emerging security threats confronting Allies and Partners, including WMD proliferation, internationally active terrorist groups, failed and failing states, as well as ‘states of concern’;

8.     NATO’s role as a political organization in the strengthening of Disarmament, Arms Control, and Non-Proliferation;

9.     The political discussions and decisions on the means of Allied defense, including, among others, the role of nuclear weapons and defensive systems;

10. The importance of strengthening awareness of the gender dimension in all aspects of international security.
