‘The Great Britain’s contribution into strengthening Ukraine’s defences is highly appreciated, and we do count upon further cooperation,’ -- Iryna Herashchenko

“The contribution of Great Britain into bolstering Ukraine’s defence capacity is highly appreciated, and we reckon on further collaboration, including widening the inter-parliamentary dialogue,” stated the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Iryna Herashchenko at a meeting with Julian Lewis, Chair of the Defence Select Committee of the British House of Commons.

In the course of her working visit to Great Britain, the First Vice-Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament Iryna Herashchenko held a meeting with Julian Lewis, Chair of the Defence Select Committee of the British House of Commons on October 30, 2017.

During the meeting, the politicians talked over the humanitarian and security posture in the Donbas, as well as desirable boosting the inter-parliamentary connections. At the security talks, they exchanged their views over the UN peacekeeping mission to the Donbas. “There are heavy debates today over the future UN Donbas mission. Ukraine is counting on Britain’s support in the mission tools and mandate preparations,” pointed out Iryna Herashchenko.

The tense Crimean situation was also high on the meeting agenda. Iryna Herashchenko once again stressed Ukrainians in the Crimea and Crimean Tatars in particular are under a constant heavy pressure by the occupying authorities, resorting to unlawful chases, searches and detentions widely.

“As of today, there have been forty odd Tatars brought in by the occupants. Recently, through concerted actions by the Ukrainian authorities supported vastly by the President of Turkey, it has finally become possible to free Ilmi Umerov and Akhtem Chiygoz, the deputy heads of the Crimean Tatars representative body, the Mejilis, both of whom had been jailed as political prisoners,” informed Iryna Herashchenko.

Ukraine is ready to use every gear for further liberation of all the Ukrainian citizens illegally held throughout the occupied territories of Ukraine and in Russia.

The Ambassador of Ukraine to Great Britain Nataliia Halibarenko was also in attendance at the meeting.
