V.Ariev, the Head of the Committee on Culture, Science, Education and Media of the PACE, heading the Ukrainian delegation reported at the summer session of the Parliamentary Assembly on freedom of press and pressmen security.

Some experts call investigative journalism the watchdog of public welfare. “It is vital for support of democracy, corruption counteraction. If we were in a position to bring this viewpoint to our colleagues from other national parliaments, we would make a significant progress,’ said the Ukrainian parliamentarian. He also stressed that the investigative capability of journalism in traditional media has been demolished for lack of media financing to which many got accustomed. The number of pressmen went down as the investigation burden grew up. It is well worth thus supporting to establish national media investigation funds. The environment which promotes and supports journalist investigations and media freedom cannot live well without security to wide extent provided properly for these journalists.
