Members of the Parliamentary permanent delegation of Ukraine (PPDU) to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe participated in the summer session debates on adherence to the principle of accountability in the Parliamentary Assembly, on promoting integrity in governance to tackle political corruption etc.

The head of the Ukrainian delegation V.Ariev expressed his gratitude to Liliane Maury Pasquier for her report “Recognition and implementation of the principle of accountability in the Parliamentary Assembly” capable of upgrading the Assembly’s performance.

The head laid stress on the Europe’s aspiration to promote democracy, supremacy of law, and human rights. “At the same time we are in no position to remove the President of the Assembly once appointed. We need to temper the system breakdown caused by the President Pedro Agramunt and others of that ilk,’ underlined V.Ariev, calling on the Assembly to set to work the removal procedure as soon as possible.

The principle of accountability is the very foundation the Assembly is set to work on; all the members thus ought to adhere closely to their powers and duties.

“We need to build a strong, responsible and democratic Europe capable of protecting interests of its citizens,’ stated a Ukrainian politician.

When talking on the integrity in governance to tackle political corruption, it was denoted that parliamentary control could be a powerful device to counteract corruption, provided that the parliament itself is fair and open. The most burning issue is corruption for emerging markets and countries in transition. For all that it is a social phenomenon corruption has names, surnames, offices. High-ranking or political corruption is the most harmful and toxic. In view of the Agramunt’s case, today’s PACE accountability decision is quite important as the Assembly has finally obtained an operative tool to tackle corruption within the Organization.
