Committee on Freedom of Speech and Information Policy

The committee held parliamentary hearings ‘State and Communal Print Media Reforms: Experience. Obstacles. Solutions’. Partakers: MPs, executive authorities’ representatives, media lawyers, editors of newspapers under reforms, public organization delegates.

The committee’s head and the OSCE’s representative in Ukraine, present at the meeting, highlighted inevitability of mass media reforms in Ukraine in the very near future.

Committee on Affairs of Veterans, Combatants, ATO Participants and Disabled People

The committee conducted a round table on the topic ‘Improvements to war veterans social protection: Isn’t It High Time for an Integrated Veterans’ Ministry To Rule?’. The event was attended by MPs, central and local executives, public veteran organizations.

Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations

As the parliamentary ombudsman’s five-year term had elapsed, the committee, having examined them through, did appoint three new lawful candidates for the office.   

The head of the committee held a meeting with Alain Aeschlimann, the Head of Mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Ukraine. The sides discussed the current state of affairs in our country, including eastern Ukraine, as well as the issues of mutual cooperation in settling humanitarian problems resulting from the Russian aggression against Ukraine. The committee’s head shared brief information about the present work and pending draft bills of the committee, notably those regarding protection of rights and freedoms of the forcibly displaced persons. 

Committee on Legal Policy and Justice

The ‘Procedure of Judicial Pre-trial Dispute Settlement’ workshop took place in the committee with MPs, local lawyers and judges, and a Canadian judge in attendance. The workshoppers noted that the pre-trial apparatus had long been closely scrutinized in Ukraine in the capacity of an alternate tool for dispute settlements. The piloting knowledge was shared out by three Ukrainian courts' representatives.

Committee on Financial Policy and Banking

‘There is no accelerated economic growth without the effective banking system,’ considers the committee’s head Serhii Rybalka. The committee held a conference on rekindling of lending in Ukraine attended by the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine, the National Bank of Ukraine, some international organizations etc.

 The need for a 5-7 years branch development plan was stressed, along with the huge international experiences to be taken into account. The recently adopted law on the export credit agency was also clapped by the attendants.

Committee on Social Policy, Employment and Pension Provision

The committee checked the progress of implementation of the parliamentary hearings’ recommendations as to verifying and validating of individual personal data filed for welfare benefits and pensions. A ministerial delegate informed the committeemen and those present that the 2016-2017 verification saved as much as UAH 102 m of the state funds. The committeemen agreed upon further need for the welfare benefits and pension verification, and on urgent launching of a unified registry of welfare benefits of all kinds, privileges, subsidies and the like. The hearings shall result in the appropriate committee’s recommendations.
