The Verkhovna Rada Committee on Fuel and Energy Complex, Nuclear Policy and Nuclear Safety has hosted a roundtable entitled "Ratification of Paris Agreement: What's Next?"

The roundtable participants were: people's deputies, head of the State Agency for Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving, representatives of the Environment and Natural Resources Ministry of Ukraine, Energy and Coal Industry Ministry of Ukraine, Ministry of Regional Development, Construction and Housing and Public Utilities, EU Delegation to Ukraine, international and Ukrainian experts, heads of concerned companies, and non-government organizations.

The event was conducted at the initiative of people's deputy Oleksii Riabchyn. He noted that the implementation of the Paris Agreement will first of all facilitate the introduction of innovative, highly efficient technologies and will have a strategic goal to end the era of fossil fuels to avoid catastrophic consequences of the climate change.

Director of the climate change and ozone screen department Svitlana Hrynchuk said that the first priority step of the Environment and Natural Resources Ministry of Ukraine would be the adoption of the concept on climate policy of the state.

Representative of the Energy and Coal Industry Ministry Oksana Moroz noted that despite the necessity for shifting to low-carbon energy, Ukraine would not be able to abandon its coal energy.

The participants of the roundtable also noted that an important part of the actions within the Paris Agreement should be the measures on adaptation to the climate changes.

At the end of the roundtable, Oleksii Riabchyn emphasized that the amount of work on implementation of this international agreement requires excessive efforts and coordination of all branches of power and representatives of the civil society, science, business and the world community.

Reference information: On July 14, 2016, the Ukrainian Parliament adopted the draft law "On ratification of Paris Agreement." Therefore, Ukraine will become the 20th country to ratify the Agreement being ahead of the European Union, United States, Canada and Japan. The Paris Agreement was signed by 175 countries in April 2016. The Paris Agreement is an agreement within the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change dealing with greenhouse gases emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance starting in the year 2020.
