Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations Hryhorii Nemyria says the authorities must consider internally displaced persons not as a problem, but as an opportunity for successful democratic development of Ukraine.

He said this within the framework of the international conference entitled "Humanitarian crisis in Ukraine" conducted by the Atlantic Council, a think tank in the field of international affairs, in Washington.

"They were made abandon their homes due to certain threats to their life. At the same time, they did not go away from Ukraine as they consider it their motherland. These people bring new opportunities, skills and experience to different regions of Ukraine and we should not ignore that. Thus, we have to immediately draft respective strategy and policy in this field and establish institutions to implement them," he said.

According to Hryhorii Nemyria, the crisis and collapse of the social standards in Ukraine only partially were the results of the war in Donbas, however, they mainly were the result of the failed policy of the Ukrainian authorities.

Besides, the Chairperson of the Committee informed about the results of the extended offsite meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations that took place in Donetsk region. The visit there was dedicated to the monitoring of protection of rights of internally displaced persons and citizens of Ukraine living in the antiterrorist operation zone. Besides, Hryhorii Nemyria informed about the establishment of a monitoring group formed of people's deputies of Ukraine on protection of rights of internally displaced persons and Ukrainian citizens living in the antiterrorist operation zone.

"It is very important that the migrants have not gone to other countries and stayed in Ukraine despite the war and corruption. That is a very good signal," John Herbst, the director of the Eurasian Center in the Atlantic Council analytical center (the United States), said.
