The leadership of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine took part in various events.

Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andrii Parubii expects the Ukrainian Parliament to consider next week draft law to ensure second reading of constitutional amendments

Andrii Parubii said this at the meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ukraine Shigeki Sumi.

The meeting participants discussed bilateral cooperation at the level of the Parliaments of Ukraine and Japan; the situation in Ukraine; provision of Japan's humanitarian aid to Ukrainian children; and organization of days of Japan and Ukraine in both countries.

On Thursday, Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andrii Parubii met with the members of the European Commission for Democracy through Law.

Andrii Parubii thanked the guests for "their clear support:" "We do highly appreciate the contribution of the Venice Commission in issues touching Ukraine, in issues touching the protection of the territorial integrity of our country. It is very important for us. The support of the European institutions is very important for us."

The Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada noted that Ukraine is currently facing "hard times: it learns how to protect its territorial integrity from the military invasion, Russian occupation and at the same time, how to implement reforms almost in all fields of life of our state." "It is complicated as we know how our neighbors from the Eastern European countries passed through such reforms," he said.

First Deputy Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Iryna Heraschenko took part in the high-level meeting entitled "Internal displacement in Ukraine: further steps" organized by the Council of Europe in Strasbourg on May 24, 2016.

At the meeting with the members of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) on Thursday, Deputy Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oksana Syroyid said: "Thanks to joint efforts of the Ukrainian and European experts we managed to find those formulas of amendments to the Constitution that would really allow us to hold the reforms." "Moreover, understanding how challenging it is to introduce something new we actually started our work from the moment when the constitutional amendments were voted for at the very first time," she said.

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine hosted the III International Conference entitled "Governance and reformation of national security and intelligence services: best international practices."

The event was dedicated to the determination of key challenges and priorities of reforms, identification of weaknesses of the civil control and respective decisions, studying the best European practices and opportunities for their application in Ukraine, etc.

In her opening speech at the event, Deputy Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oksana Syroyid thanked the Oleksandr Razumkov's center for economic and political researches, office of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Ukraine, delegation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands for the organization of the event dedicated to the discussion of problems related to reformation of security and intelligence services. She said that now the most important is to ensure "civil control, and reformation of the security and defense sectors."

Syroyid noted that the people's deputies are currently facing "the clash of civilizations" when some part of the people wants to live within the old paradigm and another part of them wants certain changes. She believes that the establishment of the Euro-Atlantic Space for Ukraine interfactional deputy association at the initiative of people's deputy Iryna Friz (Petro Poroshenko Bloc faction) is an attempt to resist to the system.

The parliamentary committees hosted a number of events and their representatives took part in various visits and meetings.

On May 25, Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Affairs Hanna Hopko and co-chairperson of the deputy group of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for interparliamentary relations with the Italian Republic Serhii Alekseev met with Chair of Italian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe / Rapporteur for the PACE on corruption Michele Nicoletti within the framework of the visit of a delegation of people's deputies of Ukraine to the Italian Republic.

The Parties discussed current state of the Ukrainian-Italian relations and noted high level of development of the interparliamentary cooperation. Besides, they discussed finding of optimal ways to deepen cooperation between the parliaments of the two states, as well as between the national delegations within the framework of the PACE.

Informing about current situation in Ukraine and activity of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in reformation of the Ukrainian legislation, Hanna Hopko thanked Michele Nicoletti for the support on a complicated path of implementation of reforms in Ukraine, in particular, in the field of anticorruption legislation.

The Committee on Science and Education and the Committee for Informatization and Communications jointly with Association of Information Technology Enterprises of Ukraine carried out “round table” meeting entitled: "Educational Policy in the Conditions of Informational Society". The goal of this event was renovation of national educational policy by the way of implementation of innovative information & communication technologies (ICT) and establishment of key areas for improvement of regulatory support of this policy. Besides representatives of the mentioned committees and Association of Information Technology Enterprises of Ukraine, heads of International Research-Educational Centers, Institute of Higher Education of National Academy of Pedagogic Sciences of Ukraine, and National Technical University “KPI” were invited for participation.

Chairperson of Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations Hryhorii Nemyria met with Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muiznieks in Strasbourg.

The Parties discussed the project of the Council of Europe on protection of rights and freedoms of internally displaced persons in our state and cooperation in its implementation: in particular, in the field of legislation, coordination, exchange of information and issues related to integration of internally displaced persons.

Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations Hryhorii Nemyria had meeting with newly appointed Representative of Secretary of Council of Europe / Executive Secretary of the European Social Charter Regis Brillat.

The Parties discussed release and return of people's deputy of Ukraine / PACE member Nadiya Savchenko.

Besides, the Parties discussed the priorities in cooperation between the Council of Europe and Ukraine. Regis Brillat said one of his major functions will be close cooperation with the Parliament, in particular, with the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations. The Parties discussed the situation with internally displaced persons in Ukraine and noted the importance of protection of their rights and freedoms.

Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations Hryhorii Nemyria met with Secretary of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) Thomas Markert in Strasbourg.

The Parties discussed the release and return of Verkhovna Rada deputy and member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Nadiya Savchenko to Ukraine. Mr. Markert said Savchenko has become a symbol of Ukraine's fight for its independence and territorial integrity.

The Parties also discussed the situation in Ukraine and issues related to the Russia's aggression against our state. Besides, they discussed the protection of rights and freedoms of internally displaced persons in particular, elimination of discrepancies in the legislation on internally displaced persons and authorizing these people to take part in elections.

Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations Hryhorii Nemyria and Verkhovna Rada Ombudsman Valeriya Lutkovska expressed their concerns over the statement by the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment on suspension of their monitoring visit to Ukraine.
