During the visit of the Ukrainian delegation to Iceland, the government of this country submitted a five-year plan of support for Ukraine to the parliament. The parties discussed ways to strengthen this document.

This was reported by Arsenii Pushkarenko, the Head of the Group for Interparliamentary Relations with Iceland, MP, Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation.

“We spent several days in the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik. Our parliamentary delegation, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Office of the Ombudsman of Ukraine held meetings at all levels: in the parliament with speakers, representatives of all factions, the Foreign Affairs Committee, and with the Prime Minister, members of the government, and the President of Iceland. It was during our visit that the government introduced a five-year plan to support Ukraine. We discussed with members of the government and parliament how this document can be further strengthened, filled with more specifics and support mechanisms,” the politician said.

He added that Iceland does not have its own armed forces and is fully protected by NATO, so a direct security agreement between our countries cannot be signed. Iceland, like all civilised countries in the world, is now standing by our side, which is why a plan to help Ukraine has been developed.

According to the MP, the Ukrainian delegation also discussed with its partners the issue of comprehensive support for our country in all possible international formats.

“The first is advocating for our accession to NATO. And we received assurances at all levels that Iceland, as a founding member of the Alliance, will advocate for our accession to NATO. The second is the broad implementation and support of the Ukrainian Peace Formula. We particularly emphasised the fourth point – the return of all our hostages and prisoners of war. Iceland has already joined the coalition for the return of children led by Canada and Norway. We have also discussed the possibility of joining or even considering political leadership in the return of Ukrainian civilians illegally detained by russia,” the parliamentarian said.

He reminded that Iceland is already doing a lot and will continue to do so for Ukraine's victory. In particular, the official Reykjavik has joined the IT coalition and the coalition for demining. In both cases, active work is underway, and an accredited diplomat of Iceland in Ukraine has been appointed to facilitate greater interaction in these coalitions.
